Demystifying 'quality'

Demystifying 'quality' when picking stocks for portfolio in 2020

“Quality” is something which has not been defined by anyone. At one end, there is quality and at the opposite end, there has to be non-quality or junk.
There is a lot of discussion on what happens when you buy quality but much less on what happens when you buy junk. Is investing in junk really an option for the long term? Similarly, much is talked about on buying quality but not enough is said on buying false starts.
Is quality quantitative or qualitative?
Market participants will agree that high return ratios, positive free and operating cash flows, no leverage and no pledge—these are the things that make quality, parameters one can easily check but it is only partly true.
We think it is not only about these financial metrics; quality encompasses a much larger embodiment that includes various other parameters.
While corporate governance has been a trending topic, other factors that merit attention include the culture of the company; alignment of culture with strategy; management integrity, thought leadership and track record of execution.
Apart from that, investors should monitor discipline, fairness, transparency, and disclosures by the management; reliability of guidance and the conduct they have in their businesses. These are softer qualitative aspects that also go into defining quality.
Is the quality of growth and earnings relevant?
Quality is normally assumed to be of either business or the management. Also, the quality of growth is also important.
One should assess whether companies have cyclical businesses or structural and secular growth businesses and whether they have volatile earnings or consistent and stable earnings.
A long runway where competitive moats have an increasing trajectory offers longevity of growth. Capital efficiency in business and prudent capital allocation will ensure sustainable growth. Earnings beat and surprises compared to consensus estimates will lead to valuations automatically coming down.
Is quality external or internal?
A lot of discussion takes place on macros and betting on things that are not in our control, whereas a good part of quality incidentally happens to be internal, inward-looking and company-specific.
When we invest in companies with growth and quality together, there could be points of time when growth could be low due to a tighter external environment. But, once the external environment eases, or these companies take their own internal steps to counter it, the returns usually compensate for the lost period.
Is the margin of safety present in quality?
It has always been perceived that price is a measure of valuation and margin of safety is measured by the price we pay and the value we get. If one pays a low price, it means you get value and there is a margin of safety.
We believe that investing in quality itself is a big margin of safety. If one invests in quality stocks, the risk of permanent loss of capital reduces significantly which offers a margin of safety.
Is high PE (price/earnings) a symbol of quality?
Whenever there is a discussion about high PE and quality, it gets co-mingled. It is not necessary that quality has to be high PE or that high PE has to be quality. That correlation should not be made causation.
Are positive returns an indicator of quality?
It is convenient to presume that companies whose stock prices went up in the last one year are quality companies. This is not the case. Quality is measured by the strength in fundamentals of a company and not by the recent price rise.
Can growth vs value be replaced by quality vs value?
Among the various styles of investing, growth vs value has been among the most discussed one. The narrative has recently shifted to the quality vs value. Historically, its either growth or value, one of the two styles perform. Quality, in our view, should be taken as non-negotiable in either.
Growth correction or quality consolidation?
Value is dependent on earnings growth we get in the future, over the next few years. If a company estimated to grow profits at 20% delivers flat or negative growth, then it’s a risk because along with earnings, valuation multiples will also go down.
On the other hand, quality stocks normally face time consolidation which is not as worrying as growth correction in most of the cases.
Is growth expensive or is quality expensive?
In a growth starved environment, growth stocks will obviously get a premium. It’s important to dissect whether its growth stocks or is it quality stocks which are trading at premium valuations.
In most of the cases, it is those companies that have a steady combination of both, and attributing it to only one of the two is erroneous.

With many big companies likely to hit the primary market, 2020 could be far better than 2019. In fact, it could be the best in the past five years, as suggested by experts who Moneycontrol spoke to.
Only 17 companies launched their IPOs in 2019. Dinesh Engineers withdrew its public issue due to weak market conditions during the year 2019. Hence, 16 firms (against 24 companies in 2018) raised Rs 12,362 crore in total.
The year 2020 is expected to be completely different as at least 20 companies will come out with their IPOs and the size could be far more than those launched in 2019, experts feel.
"2020 will be much better than last 5 years in terms of number of companies and size of IPOs. India is capital hungry and a good way to raise long term capital is through equities," Umesh Mehta, Head of Research, Samco Securities told Moneycontrol.
As per the Prime Database (as of December 20, 2019), the size of IPOs which already received SEBI approval or awaiting nod could be more than Rs 30,000-35,000 crore.VK Sharma, Head PCG & Capital Markets Strategy at HDFC Securities also sees substantially higher number of IPOs in the 2020 compared to 2019.
More than 30 companies filed their draft red herring prospectus since September 2018 (including 20 in 2019 itself), of which Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders, Route Mobile (Rs 600 crore approved by SEBI on January 1, 2020), Samhi Hotels (Rs 2,000 crore), IREDA (Rs 750 crore), Shyam Steel, Bajaj Energy (Rs 5,450 crore), Powerica, Satyasai Pressure, Annai Infra Developers have already received approval from the SEBI for launching IPOs within a year.
The companies which filed their IPO papers in 2019 include SBI Cards & Payment Services (Rs 9,600 crore), Burger King India (Rs 1,000 crore), Puranik Builders (Rs 1,000 crore), Home First Finance (Rs 1,500 crore), Easy Trip Planners (Rs 510 crore), Equitas Small Finance Bank (Rs 1,000 crore), UTI AMC (Rs 4,000 crore), Montecarlo and Mukesh Trends Lifestyle.
Umesh Mehta said HDB Financial, SBI Cards, Burger King etc would be a few IPOs which are expected to gain limelight in 2020.
Image10112020
HDB Financial, National Insurance Company, National Stock Exchange, RailTel and Indian Railways Finance Corporation are also expected to file their prospectus for IPOs soon.
"A lot of new issues (IPOs) are lined up in 2020, some of which could have the potential to create long term wealth," Siddhartha Khemka, Senior Vice President | Head-Retail Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services said.
But again as usual, any weak market condition/sentiment can slow down or force companies to think many times to launch IPOs, experts feel.
"Though a lot of IPO are lined up. Sailing of IPOs would be depend on 2 main factors first is pricing of the issue & second is market scenario (Sentiments), If market scenario continue to remain positive than we may see more IPO than 2019," Hemang Jani, Head – Advisory, Sharekhan said
From the recession year of 2008 in equities i think from the lows of NIFty @2250 we have almost covered a rally of 60% and the rest 40% of the current Bull Market rally should play out within the next few years when the earnings of NIFty picks up along with the economic conditions...... then which is prevailing today......

[8:47 PM, 12/30/2019] Jiten Patel: Psychology in stock market of fear....... Boiling Frog Syndrome
The more you have fear today of stock market going down is basically a good Buying opportunity...... because markets move up and up on the wall of worries..... uncertainty.....doubts..... infact the best time to invest in Markets is the time your conviction is at the lowest Levels......
The market if you notice Rationally is slowly slowly going up and up......but the movement upwards is going to be so slow.....ie few day of upside and very less days of corrections..... such steps of boiling frog syndrome are taken by markets to keep the Investors confused and in fear so the Investors cannot Purchase STOCKS and infact are forced to Sell because the uncertainty created in the environment..... infact the real reason is that markets doesn't want you to be in the market and Purchase STOCKS......i mean the market is not interested that Investors participate in the market at current levels......the real thing is markets wants to move Higher but it wants to go up silently without propoganding about its intensions of moving Higher...... okay why will you propogand about hitting a Jackpot to the whole world......will you...... certainly not.....the same way market also doesn't want to do it ....
The real reason is that when the right time comes the market itself will start propoganding about its Intensions of going Higher by advertising in newspapers....tv business channels....in social parties when everybody will be talking and discussing about markets and stocks ......when there will be flooding of IPOs ......
Yes it will be propaganded so everyone starts to know that the market is moving up and up...

Now this time of propoganda is what the market is looking for because now the whole world wants to have the piece of the cake......ie making easy money...... when the lust of making easy money will have no boundaries..... Yes..... the ripe time has come to offload and sell market and STOCKS to this passionate Investors who will come in flocks like a tsunami wave.....
But note inbetween there will be many corrections of 5% to 15% which no one can predict......

IT is my personal opinion and view only and not a recommendation to buy or sell and I reserved to be proved otherwise also.......

What is the evolutionary purpose of happiness?

What is the evolutionary purpose of happiness?
By Oliver StaleyApril 18, 2017
Life for the first humans was undoubtedly brutal. They were in a constant struggle to stay warm and fed, while warding off predators and enduring an unforgiving climate.  To survive, they needed to be tough, intelligent, and resourceful.

And happy.

Evolutionary psychologists theorize that happiness was an adaptive advantage. Happiness aided our survival in all sorts of important ways—it made us fitter, more attuned to our environment, more social, more energetic—and because happy people were more apt to survive, they were more likely to pass on their happiness genes. Like all evolutionary adaptations, happiness first occurred as a genetic variation, but persisted because it helped us stay alive.

Happiness describes a range of emotions, from pleasure to glee to contentment. But in the context of evolution, the happiness that proved most useful was the tingle of delight we feel when we’re met with unexpected good fortune.

That sensation is fueled by dopamine, a chemical in the brain associated with motivation and reward-seeking behavior. Scientists who study dopamine know it increases when we’re pleasantly surprised, but not when we’re merely satisfied. An unexpectedly good result, like surprising yourself on a test, will send dopamine level soaring. Biting into a chocolate bar won’t create the same glow, because it holds no surprise. Dopamine heightened our ancestors’ awareness and focused their attention on what they wanted; they craved the feelings it produced and it guided them toward comfort and love, conditions that help make us human.

“Dopamine isn’t interested in what’s expected; it’s interested in what’s surprising so it can help you learn about your environment,” says Robb Rutledge, a researcher at University College London. “Your happiness depends on whether things are getting better or worse, and knowing that can help you make better decisions in the future.”

Happiness and early humans
In early human societies, where communities were small and life could be perilous, happiness could make the difference between who survived and who didn’t.

The happier people would not only be more likely to attract a mate, but also to develop the skills that would help them survive. Workers in a good mood are more creative and energetic, studies show. Happy people are more attractive to others and develop stronger relationships, which would be essential for making friends and allies to help in adverse conditions.

As a result, happy survivors would be more likely to pass along the genes that produce happiness. Research confirms that much of happiness is hereditary: Studies of identical twins raised apart showed 50% of an individual’s happiness is due to genetic factors.

“There’s lots of research that shows that happiness has benefits,” said Sonya Lyubomirsky, a psychology professor at the University of California-Riverside and the author of The Myths of Happiness. “It’s not just something that makes us feel good but helps us succeed in in life. People who are happy make more money, are more likely to get married, have stronger immune systems, and more friends.”

So it makes sense that as evolution favored happiness, we evolved to be happy. Studies show that, on the whole, humans are pretty happy as a species. Researchers compiled the results of nearly 1,000 surveys—which cumulatively polled 1.1 million people around the world—and found most people consider themselves to be more happier than not, ranking their happiness, on average, just above seven on a 10-point scale.

Choices and Decision Making

[2:13 PM, 12/28/2019] Jiten Patel: The choices and Decisions which you take and which are big and which are positive in Nature.... you basically are planting the seed as A New Neuron in your mind body and brain...... Now the moment you have planted the seed of that New Neuron and start working repetitively and continuously on that Big Idea.... Decision and Choice...... the few Neurons adjacent to the New Neuron created starts to get connected and forms a Neural Synaptic Network Circuits.....its GIVING Water and Fertilizer to the seed..... Then the more you start working on the Big Idea.... Decision and Choice you have been thinking and making it happen practically more and more New surrounding Neurons starts to get connected to the same Neural Synaptic Network Circuits and thereafter the Neural Synaptic Network Circuits so formed becomes so strong with your practical experiences that your brain mind and body automatically starts to work around that Big Idea..... Decision and Choice that you had made earlier......move the seed has grown to become a Big Tree with hundreds of branches and thousands of green leaves.....
Once this strong neural synaptic network circuits are formed and you work repetitively and continuously to achieve the results of that initial seed planted i guarantee you that you will achieve the goal of that Big Ideas.... Decisions and choices.....the big huge tree will start bearing Fruits.....
But always note it is a slow process and the growth you may find will be very unconvincing.....it will be having a subliminal effect.....one which will not be visible......
Initially it will be like creating the Dots but this Dots will connect sooner or later.....but they will do connect and there will be a complete paragidm shift the way you will be thinking and taking Decisions and thereafter making your choices.....
[2:17 PM, 12/28/2019] Jiten Patel: So more you read books more Dots will form and one day you will be surprised all these dots will start connecting automatically
[2:17 PM, 12/28/2019] Jiten Patel: The more you read and thereafter apply and experience the knowledgeable and wiser will you become......
Only LEARNING will build on your knowledge but you will achieve Wisdom only after putting that theory knowledge in to practice.......
[2:18 PM, 12/28/2019] Jiten Patel: Also it tells about delayed gratification GIVING wonderful results

Why We Copy Each Other, and 5 Ways It Can Change Us

Are you protecting yourself from other people's bad moods and habits?

MENTS

Emotions and moods, such as anxiety and happiness, can spread from person to person. The emotional states of the other people we interact with affect our emotions and moods. This emotional mimicry occurs spontaneously—and unconsciously. For example, evidence shows that the emotions others express on Facebook influence our own moods. Reducing positive words in people’s Facebook newsfeeds appeared to make them sadder, and vice versa. When college freshmen a receive random assignment to live with mildly depressed roommates, they become increasingly depressed themselves over a three-month period.
Through biological programming, we imitate other people’s emotional displays—facial expressions, bodily gestures—and in doing so, we come to adopt their internal feelings. The biological mechanism is the mirror neuron system in the human brain. Our brain practices doing actions we merely observe in others, as if we were doing them ourselves. A good example of mirror neurons is a baby crying in day care because it hears another baby cry.
Five implications of mirror neurons:
1. Empathy
Mirror neurons facilitate empathy—the ability to imagine how others are feeling. It draws us into the life of another’s mind, allowing us a deep understanding of their mental states. For instance, some have described contagious yawning as a primitive reflection of the capacity to empathize with others. When we see another person yawn, we yawn automatically ourselves. A study showed that waitresses who mimicked their customers either verbally or physically received larger tips than waitresses who did not use mimicry. The waitresses either recited back verbatim their customers’ orders or paraphrased the orders. When someone mimics you in a good way, it communicates a kind of pleasure that you get from interacting with the other person.
2. Prosocial behavior.
The imitation of emotional expressions increases social interactions and interpersonal bonding. We create a sense of similarity by imitating each other in various ways. Couples with the greatest similarity have shown the strongest emotional connection. A study found that facial similarity in married couples increased over time and concluded that this similarity arose as a consequence of married couples frequently mimicking each other’s facial expressions.
3. Craving.
When former smokers watch other people smoking, it automatically activates their mirror neurons. This activation of mirror neurons triggers the cues that are more likely to cause a relapse.
4. Inheriting psychological trauma.
Psychologist Ginot comments on the role of the mirror system in the transmission of parents' internal life to children. Children are innately vulnerable to the parent’s emotional state. The child tends to internalize the parents’ emotional attitudes (e.g., fear and depression) as his own without awareness. For example, evidence indicates that parents’ PTSD symptoms were significantly associated with child distress and behavioral problems.
5. Happiness.
Happiness spreads from person to person. Evidence suggests that a person is about 15 percent more likely to be happy if a directly connected person is happy. Happy people tend to be more helpful, less hostile, or merely display an emotion that is contagious. Similarly, an excitement in one’s field can be quite useful in maintaining students’ interest in the subject. Students are unlikely to be interested in a subject unless the teachers display enthusiasm in the importance of the subject.
In sum, emotional imitation promotes understanding and togetherness that makes us feel closer to each other. However, the emotions (enthusiasm, irritation, frustration) friends express, including through online social networks, influence our own moods. These nonverbal communications unconsciously color our attitudes. To protect yourself from catching other people’s bad moods, choose wisely the company you keep. As Mark Twain put it:
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”
